Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate X% of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 200 = 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30. The first calculator on this page does this automatically.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 30 is what percent of 200? = (30 ÷ 200) × 100 = 15%. The second calculator handles this.

What is the percentage change formula?

Percentage change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease. For example, going from 80 to 100 is a +25% increase.

What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?

A percentage point is an absolute difference between two percentages. If an interest rate goes from 2% to 5%, it increased by 3 percentage points, but that is a 150% relative increase. Percentage change measures the relative change; percentage points measure the absolute difference.

How do I calculate a percentage decrease?

Use the percentage change calculator. Enter the original (higher) value as "From" and the new (lower) value as "To". The result will be negative, indicating a decrease. For example, from 100 to 80 gives −20%, meaning a 20% decrease.
