Why use our Markdown Table Generator?
Writing Markdown tables by hand — aligning pipe characters, counting dashes, remembering the :---: syntax — is tedious and error-prone. This generator lets you focus on the data. Paste from a spreadsheet and your table is ready in seconds. The output is clean, aligned GitHub Flavored Markdown that renders perfectly in GitHub READMEs, Notion, Obsidian, GitLab, Confluence, and any other Markdown-supporting platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Markdown table?
A Markdown table is a way to display structured data in plain text using pipes (|) and dashes (-) as separators. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) is the most common flavour and is supported by GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, Reddit, and many documentation tools.
How do I paste data from Excel or Google Sheets?
Select your cells in Excel or Google Sheets, copy them (Ctrl+C / Cmd+C), then paste into the "Paste data" area on this page. The tool detects tab-separated values and builds the table automatically. The first row becomes the header.
How do I paste data from a CSV file?
Open your CSV in a text editor, copy the content, and paste it into the "Paste data" area. The tool detects comma-separated values and handles quoted fields. Alternatively, open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets first, then paste from there for even smoother detection.
What does column alignment do?
Alignment controls how text is aligned within a column when rendered. Left alignment uses :--- in the separator row, center uses :---:, and right uses ---:. No alignment (default) renders as left-aligned in most renderers. Click the alignment icon next to each header to cycle through the options.
What is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM)?
GFM is a superset of the original Markdown specification created by GitHub. It adds tables, task lists, strikethrough, and fenced code blocks on top of standard Markdown. GFM tables are the format produced by this generator and are supported by GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, and most modern documentation tools.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste or type is ever sent to a server or stored anywhere. You can use this tool offline after the page has loaded.
Can I edit the table after pasting?
Yes. After pasting, every cell in the table editor is editable. You can rename headers, change values, add or remove rows and columns, and adjust alignment. The Markdown output updates live as you type.
What Markdown platforms support tables?
GitHub READMEs, GitHub issues and pull requests, GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, VS Code (preview mode), Typora, HackMD, Confluence (with Markdown macro), Jekyll, Hugo, Docusaurus, and Reddit all support GFM tables. Standard CommonMark does not include tables, so not every Markdown renderer will display them.
