How to use this tool

  1. Select a hash algorithm from the tab strip at the top (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, etc.).
  2. Paste or type your text into the input field — the hash is generated instantly on every keystroke.
  3. To hash a file, drag and drop it onto the file area or click 'Browse file'. Works with any file type.
  4. Toggle HMAC mode and enter a secret key to generate a keyed hash for message authentication.
  5. Paste an expected hash into the comparison field to verify whether it matches your output.

Why use our Hash Generator?

Whether you're verifying a downloaded file's integrity, storing passwords securely, or debugging an API signature, you need a fast and trustworthy hash tool. This generator uses the browser's native Web Crypto API and never sends your data anywhere — making it the safest option for sensitive content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MD5 still secure?

MD5 is cryptographically broken and should not be used for security-sensitive purposes such as password hashing or digital signatures. However, it remains widely used for non-security checksums — for example, verifying that a file downloaded correctly — because it is fast and universally supported.

Can you reverse a hash?

No. Hash functions are one-way by design: they take any input and produce a fixed-length output, but it is mathematically infeasible to go from the hash back to the original input. This is what makes them useful for storing passwords — even if the database is leaked, attackers cannot recover the original passwords.

What is HMAC?

HMAC (Hash-based Message Authentication Code) combines a hash function with a secret key to produce a keyed hash. It is used to verify both the integrity and the authenticity of a message — confirming that the message was not tampered with and was produced by someone who knows the secret key.

What is the difference between SHA-1 and SHA-256?

SHA-1 produces a 160-bit (40 hex character) digest and is considered weak against collision attacks. SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family and produces a 256-bit (64 hex character) digest with much stronger security guarantees. For new applications, SHA-256 or SHA-512 is always preferred.

Is my data safe when I use this tool?

Yes. All hashing runs entirely inside your browser using the Web Crypto API. No data — whether text or files — is ever uploaded to DecoToolkit's servers or any third party. You can even disconnect from the internet and the tool will continue to work.
